So Many Games... So Little Time (to blog)...

Some games I hope to run during 2021...

I keep meaning to update here more... I had a week off earlier in January but spent a lot of it away from my home office taking a much needed break from sitting at a desk staring at computer screens for 8-12 hours a day. (Though I did devour the excellent Raised By Wolves while laying on a couch staring at a TV screen...)

More than needing a break, though, I'm realizing that most of my RPG energy these days is spent on actually running games, something that I did a metric-fuck-ton of during 2020. With alternating 5th Edition D&D games running Saturday Afternoons, games most Thursday evenings, every other Wednesday, a couple of stints running games every other Sunday morning and at least one one-shot game each month plus the one to two games I play in... well, I average two to three games per week most weeks...

While the downside of all this gaming is less blogging, the upside was running a lot of games, including a bunch of games I hadn't run before. Here is a quick break down...

  • Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition

    • I'd run CoC back in high school, so that would have been back in the 5th edition was still relatively new.. Ending up running several one shots and a short campaign and definitely think it works best in the one shot format. Highlight was running The Lightless Beacon, a free one shot scenario which is where I'd recommend starting if you're interested in running (also conveniently free on Roll20).

  • The Quiet Year

    • Ran (or facilitated rather, as its GM-less) this post-apocalyptic map game using Roll20 and would definitely give it another whirl. It is on my list of backup games for when my groups are down a few players.

  • The Sprawl

  • tremulus

    • also ran the Cthulhu mythos themed PbtA game, tremulus, using the Ebon Eaves scenario and it was fine? Would try it again, but really, what I'm jonesin' to run is the frozen wasteland playset.

  • Fiasco!

    • Had played the original version, but the revised version that swaps in cards in place of dice was a marked improvement and quite enjoyed running through the Suburbia scenario and looking forward to being able to game in person again to take advantage of having the big boxed set and all the expansion packs.

  • The Forest Hymn and Picnic

  • Alien the Roleplaying Game

    • This was the big one that I went into 2020 determined to run after getting it late in 2019... and run it I did... I ran six separate one shots of Alien, plus the Destroyer of World module as a three session mini-campaign. The system is pretty elegant and cinematic and I fully intend do a fuller review sometime soon.

So what's on tap for 2021?

  • Well, before the world locked down, my main in person group was going to play Legend of the Five Rings and I think that if and when we get back to hanging out in person every other week to game, I'll pull that out again. What with the funny dice and such, it just seems easier to do at a physical table where I can spread out the big map that came with the Winter's Embrace module and the npc tokens and such.
  • Another game I'm waiting to run in person is Punkapocalyptic the Roleplaying Game, which is a Robert Schwalb joint, like Shadow of the Demon Lord, but just different enough in rules and so forth that it would be a bit of a pain to try and adapt the demon lord roll20 sheet for.
  • I keep idly dreaming of the Tomb of the Bull King mega-dungeon for Mazes and Minotaurs, but given that I just started playing in a campaign of the Ancient Greece-themed Odyssey of the Dragonlords 5th Edition D&D game, I'm not likely to push too hard on that one for a while...
  • I snagged the pre-order of Swords of the Serpentine and I'm hoping that when it arrives and I have it in my hands to pore over that this might be the game that gets the Gumshoe system to click for me because the setting sounds fantastic.
  • Recently re-discovered my hard copy of Durance and it might make a decent online one shot game...
  • Flatland Games recently released Through Sunken Lands and Other Adventures, a Sword and Sorcery take using the same mechanics as their fantastic Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures and I'm going to run a one-shot of that on February 21st 2021 for Known World United.
  • Finally, the other game that I am itching to run and have made it my mission to get a campaign going is the ULTRAVIOLET GRASSLANDS AND THE BLACK CITY
    • ...Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City is a tabletop role-playing game, half setting, half adventure, and half epic trip; inspired by psychedelic heavy metal, the Dying Earth genre, and classic Oregon Trail games. It leads a group of ‘heroes’ into the depths of a vast and mythic steppe filled with the detritus of time and space and fuzzy riffs.
    • Let’s go on a trip. I’m looking to run Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City online. Here are some quick details… For more information go this promotional pdf
    • Games will be 3-4 hours long. Run primarily through an unholy mix of Discord and Google Docs.
    • Aiming to run once a month on a Friday Evening or Sunday Afternoon/Evening. Hoping to start in February or early March 2021.
    • Looking for 2-4 players who can commit for a 4-6 game arc.
    • Potential for players to drop in or out between arcs and for guest players if there is a core, stable group.
    • Game will be run with the Rules Light SEACAT rules skeleton with weird things bolted on. It’s a d20 system with modern mechanics and an old school feel.
    • The game prioritizes exploration, discovery and interaction over combat (though there will be room for swords & blasters too).
    • Games will stream on Twitch and be rebroadcast as edited podcasts.
I've even put together the first of several mixes to convey my musical inspirations for the game...
