Random Ship Names & Maritime Songs to Game to

Put together a few more resources for any maritime themed D&D games; first a table to use to generate random D&D inspired ship names like: the Violet Wyrm, the Smirking Voyager, the Emerald Cockatrice, the Wand'rin' Mephit and the Rusty Siren. Easily works as a dockside tavern name generator too...

Antagonist Relations Random Ship Names

Also, here are a few Maritime themed songs that will fit well for when your party visits a dock side tavern...

from The Blasting Company's A History of Public Relations Dilemmae

Finally, don't forget Thomas' fantastic Heroes of Waves and Wharves that I wrote trinkets and NPC spell lists for. 30+ pages of maritime themed material for your 5e D&D game.

Post-Apocalyptic Names

As I'm prepping to run a Godless mini-campaign, I wanted to have a good post-apocalyptic name table to draw from. The Apocalypse World name list is great, but I've used it for a bunch of games, so I've cobbled together my own list. There are six columns so that as I use up results on list one, I can use list 2 when I roll the same result again.

RPG Inspiration Twitter Bot List - Sword Names Table

Instead of posting another table of surnames I've made, I figured I'd put this up. I made a list of RPG Twitter Bots I find interesting/inspirational. If you have any suggestions to be added, let me know.

RPG Inspiration Bots - a list by @antag_relations

I'm hoping to have a Magic Sword/Weapon name bot set up later this summer. I've been thinking about the few swords in Thomas' al-Qadim AD&D Church game, like Angel's Fang and Wizard Death. I created a little table to generate Sword names and then couldn't stop myself after, so I started randomly generating thousands of interesting magic sword names that will eventually go into the bot. But for now you can enjoy sword names like "Ghost Shaver" and "Moon('s) Edge".

d20 Sword Name Prefix Sword Name Suffix
1 Foe Wrath
2 Adversary Slicer
3 Spleen Vengeance
4 Death Fang
5 Moon Blade
6 Blood Render
7 Weakling Breaker
8 Gore Shard

10 Silver Shaver
11 Dawn Death
12 King Ender
13 Angel Edge
14 Heart Skewer
15 Ghost Piercer
16 Sharp Slasher
17 Widow's Ache
18 Sir Carver
19 Steel Bane
20 Mountain Tickler

Also, last month I converted my old Zombie Twitter RPG account into a twitter account just for my RPG nonsense, which you can follow at its new handle: @antag_relations

Beyond the Wall - Reptile Cult Threat Charts

For my actual play podcast, I’ve created my own threat of the Reptile Cult, inspired by old school modules like Against the Cult of the Reptile God and Dwellers of the Forbidden City. With one or both of those modules, or just some ideas on using a hidden cult of worshippers who try to turn themselves into ancient snake people, you can use the threat charts and monsters below to run your own Reptile Cult Threat in Beyond the Wall and Further Adventures using the threat rules from Further Afield (review here).

Character History

1d6 How did the Reptile Cult affect your childhood? Gain
1 A battle scarred group of tomb raiders came to town and were looking for something. You were impressed with them and listened to their stories in the inn. -1 Wis, Skill: Forbidden Lore
2 When you were a child, several villagers were stricken with a strange plague, rose from their beds in a trance, and wandered away into the swamps, never to be seen again. You contracted the disease and felt a strange compulsion, but stayed put. -1 Con, +1 Int
3 You had trouble sleeping throughout your childhood because you could hear the Snake people's hissing speech in your dreams. -1 Int, you know the language of the Snake people.
4 Long ago, you saw hooded and cloaked figures from the cult of the Snake King take a member of your family prisoner and swore revenge. While you do not know where the cult took your kin, you believe them to still live. -1 Wis, +1 Str
5 You rescued the Blacksmith's youngest child from a snake person in the swamp, but were badly scarred in the process. -1 Cha, Skill: Investigation
6 Once, when playing as a child, you fell into and then climbed out of a pit that lead to terrifying Snake People ruins. -1 Str, +1 Dex

Threat Effects

1d6
1 A random village or settlement other than the characters' home village is infiltrated by the Reptile Cult or the Reptile Cult strengthens their position.
2 The cult sends agents looking for humans with snakeblood in them. If one of the characters has any snakeblood, then any encounter rolls this week will be with 1d6 cultists.
3 The cult sends agents to a city or village looking for artifacts about the snake people, such as books or scrolls.
4 A body of water floods or expands, providing new swampy area for snakes and other reptiles to colonize.
5 Another Threat or power in the campaign world is set back by a cult attack. Another Threat is temporarily thwarted, or a local lord is killed, or a castle is sacked and burned.
6 The cult kidnaps 1d4 humans from a village or settlement to use in their experiments.

Charm (When a creature meets the Naga’s gaze, they are affected as by the ‘False Friend’ spell. A normal saving throw versus spell is allowed and anyone who passes their saving throw is immune to the charms of this particular Naga. A creature can avoid her gaze by taking a -4 penalty to attack rolls. If the Mage Light cantrip is cast on the Naga’s eyes, it will prevent her gaze from working but she can make a saving throw versus spell to avoid the effect). Vulnerable to Iron (the Naga takes double damage from iron)

Tuesday Table - Random Travelers

Another table created for my Beyond the Wall games, this one tells you what direction and how far away travelers or a caravan are coming from. It's a result on several of the sample encounter tables from Further Afield and each time I blank, so now I've got these nifty tables to help me at least decide the direction and distance I should be looking at on my hexmap for a possible departure point.

Thursday Table: Interesting Coinage

Sometimes it feels incredibly dull to simple give out 12 copper or 6 gold, so I've written up a 2d12 Table to help determine the vintage of any coins my players might find in a game. Why not make them wonder why that goblin has four silver pieces of ancient coinage from a distant land or if the snake person they just murderized had counterfeit coins to distribute or if they were unaware of that fact.

Planescape Item Charts

One of the things I enjoy most about running Planescape using the 2nd Edition AD&D rule-set it was originally written for is all the fiddly, particular bits about the way the setting interacts with the mechanics. That includes the fact that magical weapons and armor lose part or all of their bonus as they are moved further from the plane they were created on.

As I began to prep for my current Roll20 game, I realized that I needed a good way to come up with where various magic weapons and armors were created so that we could calculate any bonuses lost as the party lugged them around the planes. So with a little work, I whipped up a few tables to do just that...

Tuesday Table - Snake Person Admixture

Since I'm home-brewing up a Reptile Cult / Snake Person Threat for the Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures actual play game that I'm running for the Antagonist Relations Podcast, I figured that I should make up a table to determine just what parts and snake and what parts are person for my snake people (or snersons, if you prefer)... Here's a 2d12 table to do just that...

Thursday Table - What's in the Sack (Beyond the Wall)

While the Further Afield supplement for Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures has several great treasure tables, what it is lacking is a "what's on the body" type chart to determine items found on a low level foe. Since I'm running two Beyond the Wall games now, I've drafted up my own little chart that I can roll on to determine an interesting item and an amount of coin by rolling 2d12 twice.

What's in the Sack, a table of random items for Beyond the Wall

Thursday Table - Medieval Thug Nicknames

I had thought that my Wednesday Beyond the Wall group was going to be heading to a city of "Ill Repute" next, but then they decided to go in the opposite direction. Still, a few weeks ago I put together a random table of Medieval Thug Nicknames for myself that I'm sure I'll put to good use eventually...

"Pitchfork Sad" - A review of Shadow of the Demon Lord

Shadow of the Demon Lord! I remember vaguely seeing kickstarter announcements and then stumbled back across it this summer after it was out in print and decided to give it a look. And man, am I glad I did.

The brief pitch of why I enjoy Shadow of the Demon Lord is this... simple, familiar but distinct d20 rules, with interesting races (hereafter referred to as Ancestries, as SotDL does), flexible class options (called Paths by SotDL), compelling monsters, a deadly and dangerous world to explore and a very distinct feel that pervades the system and setting that makes it feel very distinct from D&D. The splatter-gore meets crazed whimsy and dark mystery of the setting gels much better than I was expecting, walking a fine line sometimes between silliness and horror, as evidenced by the goblin warlock art below...

Anyway, if a darker game that allows for some wackiness and lots of random tables for character creation is what you like stuffed into your roleplaying sausages, then read the full review below for a taste of what goes into the meat grinder. (I was going to go with "is your jam" but I figured sausage making was a much more apt metaphor for SotDL, being both a bit sillier/juvenile and also a bit more grisly.)

Also, new table of random Human Skin Tones below! Or click here to skip to that...

Planarch Codex - Living Job Board Table

Obligatory Extra Life reminder... please go and support my Extra Life campaign, if you haven't already. There's still plenty of rewards that could be earned.

Doing the minimal prep work that I do for Planarch Codex, I noticed that the jobs I'd rolled up for my band of Freebooters had gotten a little less random... Lots of work for criminals, cults and merchants, lots of deliveries... Now, I could just have players re-roll when they get those results on the table, but instead I've whipped up a slightly modified Job Table, keeping the things that haven't come up (or come up as often) and adding in some new options. I'll probably return to this as needed to update, change up options as I run Planarch Codex more and more. Find a printer friendly, non-blog version here.

Menacing Manticores and Stinging Scorpions - Gussying Up D&D 5e Monsters #3

I've had Manticores on my mind lately, primarily due to my Planarch Codex pick up game which featured a manticore obsessed wizard tower, a manticore vs. gelatinous cube fight and now an order of wizard experimenters who call themselves the Millenary Order of the Manticore. Head of a man, with three rows of fangs, body of a lion, wings of a dragon (not pictured above), spiked tail that shoots spines like arrows and per legendarily accurate information source, Wikipedia, " It devours its prey whole and leaves no clothes, bones, or possessions of the prey behind." So imagine my (lack) of surprise when the D&D 5e Manticore is completely... uninspiring... How uninspiring is it? So uninspiring that the Giant Scorpion, which is also a CR 3 monster, is more dynamic but also might be overpowered, which is why covering that monster in this post as well.

Standard disclaimers apply and all that nonsense...
I haven't play-tested these at all, so they're entirely theoretical. It's changes I like, so I'll probably make use of them when I use the creatures in 5e and update the posts with any notes or discoveries.

Wicked Wights and Knavish Kenku - Gussying Up D&D 5e Monsters #2 - With Bonus Zombies

Only my second Gussying Up 5e Monsters post and I'm already breaking the rules I set for myself, taking a swipe at Kenku, which aren't in the Basic PDFs, but are in the Princes of the Apocalypse Adventure Supplement PDF (those of you playing the Antagonist Relations drinking game can take a swig for "Zack breaks a self-imposed rule). *Update* Thomas also took a crack at the Kenku after he came across them in the 5e game he's playing.

As with the previous entry, some caveats. I haven't play-tested these so they're entirely theoretical. It's changes I like, so I'll probably make use of them when I use the creatures in 5e and update the posts with any notes or discoveries.

What are you waiting for, it's Wight time?! (those of you playing the Antagonist Relations Drinking Game can take a drink for that groanworthy turn of phrase)

Brutal Bugbears and Baleful Banshees - Gussying Up D&D 5e Monsters #1

As discussed before, Thomas and I have been thinking of how to improve 5e Combat and part of that is tinkering with monsters. So here are my first attempts, a take on the Bugbear and the Banshee, both of which are included in the D&D Basic packet.

A few notes first...

I haven't play-tested these at all, so they're entirely theoretical. It's changes I like, so I'll probably make use of them when I use the creatures in 5e and update the posts with any notes or discoveries.

I'll probably steal liberally from 13th Age and Dungeon World. I also plan on only looking at monsters from the D&D Basic rules so that the originals are freely available for comparison.

D&D 5E - Player Facing Critical Success Options

Somehow, while talking about D&D 5E combat, and our dissatisfaction thereof, Thomas and I started talking about Critical Hits. I mentioned that I found it easy to make Hard GM Moves (ala Powered by the Apocalypse Games) when a player rolls a Natural 1 or Critical Failure (or conversely, when a monster rolls a critical hit) but I didn't have as satisfying a solution for when players roll a Natural 20 or Critical Success. We decided to each tackle the problem separately, each writing our own blog post without consulting the other to see the different strategies we'd come up with. Naturally, we could help but bend that rule a little bit in our conversations over the next few days but for the most part we kept mum on our plans, so neither of us have seen what the other is proposing. We're considering other cross-blog shenanigans in the future, so this is a bit of a test.

Here's his take: Gussying up monsters (the Ogre!) and crits and mine is below the jump... (and my comments on Thomas' take can be found here)
