Sample 5e D&D Google Document Template

I'm gearing up to start a new online Waterdeep Dragon Heist game, and since I was adjusting the previous google document template I use for my online 5e D&D games, thought it was a good time to make a template that could easily be shared.

Click here to create your own copy of the Antagonist Relations 5e D&D Google Document Template.

I've touched on using a google document for online games before, way back in April 2018, and this version of the google document has almost two additional years of refinement. Feel free to adjust it for your own use. Clicking the link will create a copy that you can modify and share with your players as you want.

Notes and comments about the document follow...

  • Is this just for 5th Edition D&D? Is it just for online games?
    • Of course not, it started as a document for a 2nd Edition AD&D game, and I have used modified versions for Fading Suns, Shadow of the Demon Lord and other games.
    • I have also used versions of the document for in-person games, where I as a player kept notes using the summaries section and we had a place to reference the game house rules.
    • Using the header links throughout the document, creates an outline that makes navigating through the document easy.
  • How do you use it?
    • I modify it for a new game, then use the Share option to share editing access with my players, this lets the document be a one stop source of information, notes, etc. for the game.
  • Announcements
    • The Announcement section at the top means that players see new announcements as the first thing when they visit the site.
  • Game Information
  • Character Creation
    • This Character Creation section helps set Player expectations as well as reminding them what source may or may not be allowed.
  • Character Connections
  • Non-Roll20 Content
    • Since I run online games primarily in Roll20, I provide links to any material outside of Roll20 that players might reference. Feel free to substitute your own link list here.
  • Scheduled Games
    • I use this section to list scheduled game dates and then I or the players will add notes if someone needs to miss a game or leave early. Things like Daylight Savings adjustments or holidays are also good to include.
  • House Rules
    • I included my own house rules, feel free to delete, modify or amend.
  • Skill & Proficiency Chart
    • Especially at character creation/early in the game, it can be useful for the players to see if there are any proficiency gaps. It's also handy to remember things like language and tool proficiencies.
  • Summaries
    • This is where a player will take notes during the game or put notes after the game. In order to not have any spoilers, I have put a sample entry here with notes I took during a 5th Edition D&D Dark Sun game I play in.
  • Group Inventory
    • My players find it helpful to track what weapons and armor everyone uses, to better allocate treasure and to keep track of attuned items.
  • Archived Announcements
    • I find it useful to archive announcements to this section instead of deleting them to have a record of them.

Questions, comments? Reach out and let me know if you want assistance modifying the document to best serve your game or if you find it useful!
